The Loop Grid and taxonomy filters in Elementor Pro are great for product lists, portfolios and blog layouts, until the filter does nothing, shows the wrong items or returns an empty grid. These are the causes we see most often and how to check them.
1. The filter is not connected to the right grid
If a page has more than one Loop Grid, it is easy for a filter to control a different grid than the one you are looking at. Check which grid the filter is targeting, and keep only one grid on the page while you test.
2. The posts or products have no terms assigned
A taxonomy filter can only show terms that are actually attached to items. If a category or tag is empty, or your items sit in a different taxonomy than the filter uses, the grid will look empty after filtering. Open a few items in the editor and confirm the terms are assigned.
3. The query does not match the filter
If the grid uses a custom query (for example a specific post type, an include or exclude rule or a custom query ID), the filter has to work with the same post type and taxonomy. A filter built for product categories will not work on a grid that queries a different post type.
4. Pagination or load-more conflicts
Filters, pagination and “load more” all change the same grid. If filtering works but page two shows the wrong items, test with pagination turned off first, then add it back.
5. Caching and JavaScript optimization
Filters rely on JavaScript. If a caching or performance plugin delays, combines or removes scripts, filters can fail silently. Temporarily turn off JavaScript delay and combine options and clear all caches, including your CDN, then test again.
6. A plugin or theme conflict
Test on a staging copy with other plugins disabled. Product filter plugins, custom query plugins and old Elementor add-ons are the usual causes.
7. Outdated Elementor or Elementor Pro
Check that Elementor and Elementor Pro are on compatible, recent versions. After updating, clear the Elementor cache from Elementor → Tools → Regenerate CSS & Data, and clear any site cache.
Check the Current Query limitation
Elementor documents that the Taxonomy Filter does not support the Current Query option. If you use it on an archive page and the Loop Grid is set to inherit the query from the page display conditions, the filter will not work. Define the query settings directly inside the Loop Grid widget instead, then connect the filter to that Loop Grid.
Quick checklist before you ask for help
- The filter widget is connected to the correct Loop Grid
- The Loop Grid has its own query settings, not Current Query, when you use the Taxonomy Filter
- Your posts or products actually have terms in the selected taxonomy
- The Loop Grid query matches the taxonomy shown in the filter
- Pagination or load-more was tested together with the filter
- Caches were cleared and minify or JavaScript delay was turned off for the test
- Elementor and Elementor Pro are up to date
- No JavaScript errors appear in the browser console
If you still need help, send the page URL, your Elementor and Elementor Pro versions, a screenshot of the Loop Grid query settings and any console errors. That information lets a developer find the cause much faster.
A quick test that finds the cause
- Create a blank test page with one Loop Grid and one Taxonomy Filter connected to it.
- If it works, compare that Loop Grid query, template and settings with the broken page.
- If it fails, turn off JavaScript delay, minify and combine settings, clear every cache and test again.
- Open the browser console and look for JavaScript errors when you click a filter.
- Disable other plugins one at a time on a staging copy.
Fixing it without rebuilding the page
Most of the time the layout is fine and only the query, the connection or an optimization setting needs adjusting. That is why we repair filters in place rather than rebuilding your design. If you would like help, see our Elementor Pro design and fixes service or send us the page link and we will reply within 24 hours.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does the filter show but the grid does not change?
The filter is usually connected to a different Loop Grid, the Loop Grid uses a query that does not match the taxonomy, or a JavaScript or caching problem stops the update. Check the connection first.
Can I use the Taxonomy Filter on an archive page?
Not when the Loop Grid inherits the Current Query. Elementor says you must define the query inside the Loop Grid for the filter to work.
Can I add more than one filter to a Loop Grid?
Yes. Elementor allows more than one Taxonomy Filter widget on a Loop Grid, for example to filter by category and by tag.
